It is rare to go through life without experiencing painful, traumatic events (i.e. sexual victimization, witnessing or surviving a violent act, combat, surviving a natural disaster, and much more). In fact, research suggests approximately 90% of people will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. In most cases, people experience temporary difficulty in the aftermath of trauma and return to a pre-trauma "normal." For others, the difficulties can continue and worsen over time, significantly impacting their quality of life.
When we experience the effects from trauma, we can feel as though symptoms become a huge part of who we are. Symptoms like avoidant behaviors, increased irritability and angry outbursts, extreme beliefs like "it's my fault" or "nobody can be trusted," chronic shame, and being on edge or "keyed up" remain constant. Yet, we know somehow these behaviors are not working and sabotaging our life.
To say trauma changes us would be an understatement. It infiltrates every part of our being and becomes how we see ourselves, others, and the world. We are not taught how to manage trauma and resolve; therefore, it makes sense why trauma impacts us so greatly. How would one know to make sense of what doesn't make sense? They wouldn't. The great news is we can learn to live with the memories of our traumas, make sense of why we changed and accept our history, while not having trauma consume how we show up in our lives.
